Research on Hungarian Yiddish

I wrote my M.A. thesis in Yiddish studies at Columbia University on the topic of Hungarian Yiddish proverbs. For this empirical study I conducted interviews with speakers of Hungarian Yiddish in New York in 1994-1995. Recordings of these interviews are available in the sound archives of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and can be heard here.

Although the M.A. thesis has not been published in its entirety, a short article I wrote based on this research appeared both in Hungarian and in English. Between 1995 and 1998, when I was living in Hungary again, I continued to conduct and record interviews with speakers of Hungarian Yiddish in Budapest, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, Pécs, Bratislava, Brașov and some other places. I have not written an analysis of these materials so far, but the recordings can be heard here.
